Submission Guidelines

This agency prefers to receive queries by email.

Email:  send a query with no attachments.  Put "QUERY" and the title of the manuscript in the subject line.  Include in the email a query letter, citing the genre and word count, a 1-2 page synopsis, and the first 5 pages of the manuscript.

Postal mail:  send a 1-page query, a synopsis, the first 5 pages, and a SASE.

Replies to queries take up to four weeks.

Do not query by phone or social media.

Donald Maass founded the Donald Maass Literary Agency in New York in 1980.  The agency sells more than 150 novels per year.  He is the author of several books on writing novels, including Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook(2004), The Fire in Fiction (2009), and The Breakout Novelist (2011).  He is a past president of the Association of Authors' Representatives, Inc.
